From one freelancer to a team of ten: what changed and what didn’t
Nicardo Infotech did not start as a company. It started as one freelancer, Anuj Yadav, taking on WordPress projects, answering every email personally and fixing every bug personally, usually late at night.
Today we are a team of ten. This post is a short, honest look at what that growth changed and what we deliberately kept the same.
What changed
Specialists instead of one generalist
A freelancer has to be the designer, the developer, the tester and the support desk. That works until two clients need you on the same afternoon. As a team, a designer designs, a developer develops, and someone whose only job is quality checks the work before you ever see it.
Maintenance became its own discipline
In the freelance days, maintenance was whatever time was left after project work. Now it has dedicated people, a schedule and a checklist. Updates are tested on a staging copy first, backups are verified by actually restoring them, and nobody is patching your site between meetings.
Nothing depends on one person being awake
If a site goes down while one of us is on holiday, someone else already knows how it is built. Every project is documented so that knowledge lives with the team, not in one head.
What did not change
We only do WordPress
Growth is tempting. We could have added five other platforms and a marketing department. We did not. Every person here works on WordPress every day, and that focus is the reason the work is good.
You talk to the people doing the work
There is no account-management layer between you and the person building your site. That was true when the company was one person and it is still true at ten.
Plain language
We explain what we are doing and why, without jargon. If we recommend something, we tell you what it costs you not to do it, and we tell you when you do not need it at all.
What is next
We are not chasing a bigger headcount. Ten people is enough to cover design, development and maintenance properly while staying small enough that everyone knows every client. The plan is simply to keep getting better at the one thing we do.
